Sunglasses do help with squinting, but healthy vision is imperative for the ENTIRE family. Most often we forget to protect the eyes of the younger ones however, kids’ eyes are at greater risk because their ocular lenses can’t filter UV light and prevent it from reaching the retina as effectively as adults, making them more susceptible to retinal damage over time. 1.  About 25% of an individual’s lifetime exposure to UV radiation occurs before the age of 18.Kids’ eyes are at greater risk because their ocular lenses can’t filter UV light and prevent it from reaching the retina as effectively as adults, making them more susceptible to retinal damage over time. 

It’s never too early or too late to start protecting your eyes!

2.  The best way to protect their vision is to also make sure the frame is appropriate for child’s activity, especially with kids who play outdoor sports. If they are younger, you may want to look into goggles with a band around the head, that will make it easier for them to wear them without falling off, and better yet, help with NOT loosing them. 

3. Make UV protection a family affair, if they see you wearing them daily, they will follow. UV damage is cumulative, occurring over a lifetime of exposure. Children are extra vulnerable, so get them in the habit of wearing sunglasses early! This will help to mitigate serious vision problems in the future. To prevent UV-related eye damage, sunglasses should become part of each day’s “out-the-door” routine.
